I received a MS in Electrical Engineering, 1982, and PhD in Systems engineering 1987 University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. My PhD work involved tomographic 3D microwave and acoustic imaging. From 1982 until 1999 I was employed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California in radar system engineering for earth and planetary SAR systems including working as a system engineer for the Casini Radar instrument that explored Titan. I Developed processing algorithms for SAR image focusing, polarimetry, and differential interferometry, especially in the area of phase unwrapping. Further work included development and implementation of calibration of the JPL AirSAR and Seasat and software in support of the Seasat, JPL Airsar, SIR-C, ERS, and SRTM programs. While working at the University of Zurich 1993-1995, I developed an end-to-end processing system for airborne interferometric data that included SAR focusing, motion compensation, interferogram formation, filtering and phase unwrapping to create high-resolution topographic maps. In 1995, Urs Wegmüller and I founded Gamma Remote Sensing in Muri/Gümligen, Switzerland.
